It just hit us like a piano falling from the sky…. We’ve been boiling water in our electric water kettle. WHAT!? How stupid can we be???? IT’S PLASTIC! NOT BPA-FREE. So we’re making all these efforts to avoid it, and other chemicals, but we cancel it out by being stupid and not thinking that there is some in one of our essential appliance!
Anyway, I did some research (well, I asked Dr. Google that is).
There is one post on Ineedcoffee.com which mentions it and pretty much says that the Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool Touch Tea Kettle is the best. It’s stainless steel and has no plastic parts such as the water level indicator. It compares the Hamilton Beach to the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle
and the Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle
.
There is also the Krups, which I don’t know anything about, but generally this brand seems to be great…
Target has a cheap Stainless steel option, is it all plastic-free?
Bed Bath and Beyond has a few options including the Cuisinart.
On another site I found several stainless steel options, including more Brevilles, and even a Bodum, but the main one I thought might be a winner was the Capresso H2O kettle, it’s glass! Yes glass!
So I looked into glass electric water kettles, and found the Capresso and also the Teavana and the Chef’s choice, though I’m not sure the Chef’s choice doesn’t have a plastic part on the spout. There is even a Dr. Weil glass kettle.
If you do an amazon search for stainless steel electric kettles, there are 4 pages full, none mentions if they are made of %100 bpa-free parts.
The only kettle I have found that specifically mentions it being BPA-free is the Bodum Ibis 5500-04US…
And I wish I had a verdict for which was the best, but I have no way of getting close to any of these, so I’ll have to contact each company separately and let you know at a later date. Still, I had to post these options, maybe you have something to share with me!?
For Canada online, I’ve only found the Black and Decker (which looks full of plastic!) and a few stainless steel options on Amazon.ca. There is a Capresso on the Idrinkcoffee.com site. That’s about all I’ve found…. Help?

I just purchased a Breville Variable Temperature Kettle from Sur La Table. I justified the ridiculous price of $149 because I had a gift certificate for $100 – and I figured the kettle would be delightful and easy to use to obtain the correct temps for various brews. To my dismay, I discovered while reading the manual that they allow themselves a plus/minus 10 degrees of variance on the temperature of the heated water. They claim “This product is not calibrated for commercial or scientific use. Temperatures may vary (plus/minus) 10 degrees F, however still within range for optimal brewing for each type of tea or coffee”. Yet that 10 degrees (20 total!) puts the temp selection into the temp range of buttons on each side. PLUS! The inner carton flap say “This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. I’m outraged at the arrogance and deceit of this company. I feel duped.

I’ve been trying to get my hands on several of the models I found for this post and can’t quite get to everything, especially here in Quebec.
So thanks for the great review of this product!!!!!

There is a glass electric kettle made by Medelco that claims to be BPA free. Some of the other glass and stainless one’s mentioned do have various plastic parts that come into contact with the boiling water. I just ordered the Medelco kettle from Overstock.com for around $60, including shipping. Amazon had it for about the same price but it was on backorder there. I will try to post an update after I get it and try it out. I also emailed Krups, they have two stainless models with no plastic touching the water. Breville told me that all of their kettles currently have some plastic on the inside, but they’re coming out with a new “tea appliance” that won’t. Lastly, Zojurishi (spelling?) also makes a kettle that has a plastic outside but all stainless inside, they told me it has plastic in the lid, but not the water chamber. Hope this helps.

OMG, brilliant!!
Thanks so much, Jen, for your insights!
Please let us know how the Medelco is working for you.
Here my parents have purchased the Black and Decker glass kettle with a plastic lid. It was the only one they could find and it was $60 (canadian). It’s better than nothing considering they open the lid to pour the water anyway. There is also something to be said for a good middle ground, I suppose…
So if Medelco works for you, please please please come back here to tell us!!
Thanks again.

The problem with the glass kettles seems to be that they use some type of plastic sealant between the water and the heating element. People on Amazon complain that it smells horrible, so it clearly leaches into the water.
I’m not sure if the stainless steel ones use a similar sealant but it doesn’t seem like it. I’m thinking it’s because people buy the glass ones for tea, to avoid metallic taste. (Stainless steel leaches some chromium and possibly iron into water, not in harmful amounts however.)

On second thought, the sealant is probably not plastic but silicone rubber, which might taste weird but is pretty much inert in the human body.

The one that my parents got didn’t smell weird or taste funny… But you’re right, there must be some sort of something. There just always is though, isn’t there?
I wonder if there is anything that’s good then.
Still, I suppose a glass or stainless kettle is better than a plastic one.
Although your comment about stainless was interesting, I have to look into that!!!!!
Thanks for coming by and sharing!

“Breville told me that all of their kettles currently have some plastic on the inside, but they’re coming out with a new “tea appliance” that won’t”
- If you visit their home page you’ll see a new tea maker (BTM800XL) for a whopping $250 and it will be available in May. Open up the PDF file that is available for download and search for yourself. I could not find any information on the plastic’s used and if you zoom in on the first page picture in the PDF you’ll see a rubber ring at the bottom and lots of other plastic…I don’t think thats the one they promised. Well and its not really just a kettle.

I woke up this morning with the same horrified thought… that all this time we have been boiling water in plastic! I feel so bad and so scared that I have harmed by babies in some way with BPAs. After reviewing your list, I just ordered the Hamilton Beach one that you listed above. Thank you for your help and I will let you all know how it goes.
All the best.
